3 Things To Inspect Outside Before Using Your Air Conditioning This Spring

Posted on

This spring, before you start up your air conditioning unit, you are going to want to inspect the outdoor equipment that comes with your air conditioning unit. Here are three things you are going to want to check out and ensure are in working order before you get started.

#1 Clean Outdoor Condenser Unit

The first thing you are going to want to do is clean the outdoor condenser unit. This is the large part of your unit that is outside. First, you are going to want to make sure that you don't have foliage growing around your unit. You are going to want to cut back any bushes, weeds, or vines that are growing right next to, on, or over your unit. You don't want your unit to be blocked off by plants. This will prevent air from getting to your condenser unit and will have a negative impact on its performance.

Second, you should clean your condenser unit. Over time, it is going to get dirty with dirt and dust, especially because it is outside. Wipe down the outside of the unit. If you have time, remove the screws on the top of the unit and wipe down the internal components, such as the fans, so that they are free of dust as well.

#2 Check Refrigerant Lines

Second, you should check the refrigerant lines. These lines extend from your outside condenser unit into your home. They are thicker and wider than your electric wiring. These lines contain the refrigerant, which is vital to the operation of your unit. Since these lines start outside and run into your home, they should be protected with insulation. If they are not insulated, you should have them insulated by an air conditioning company. This will ensure that nothing happens to your refrigerant line, and insulating the line will improve its efficiency.

#3 Check The Electrical Wiring

Third, you are going to want to check the electrical wiring. Make sure that the electrical wiring that extends from the unit into your house is intact and is not showing signs of damage or wear. If any wires are exposed, you are going to want to have an HVAC or electrical professional come out to your home and fix the wiring before you turn the unit on. You may want to insulate and protect the wiring as well to ensure that it doesn't get damaged.

Complete the three steps above before using your HVAC unit this spring.
