Too Hot And Need A Refill: When Cooling Your Home Is Not Working

Posted on

Air conditioners are not meant to last forever. In fact, any HVAC technician will tell you that if you can get your unit to last past a decade, you did something really right. If your elderly air conditioner does not seem to be producing enough cool air in your home, you should call for cooling services to find out the cause.

Too Hot, Need a Refill

Like sitting on a beach and sipping your favorite cold beverage and eventually coming up dry, your old air conditioner may overheat and need a refill. Refrigerant inside the machine does not last forever. If you have not had your A/C recently checked and maintained, it may be out of refrigerant. Luckily, HVAC technicians can refill the refrigerant in any unit, even units that are in their double-digit years.

Parts Replacement

The older the machine, the more likely it needs replacement parts. If you are getting some cold air in the house, but the machine seems to be struggling, have a technician check it out. The three most common parts that need replacing after an air conditioner reaches ten years and beyond are the evaporator, the condenser, and the compressor. If your unit is particularly old, say, beyond fifteen years, you may just have to replace it entirely because it will be very difficult to find the parts.

Overheating

Inside your A/C, there are heat coils and cold coils. When both the heater coils and the cold coils are hot, there is no cold air being produced. The unit is overheating and has another sort of issue occurring. It needs to be turned off and serviced right away or you will end up with a unit that is overheated and damaged beyond repair. With a unit as old as yours, this may happen at any time, so it is important to address it right away if you want to keep your old air conditioner running a while longer.

Cooling Services Manage All of the Above

Cooling services are provided by a licensed HVAC technician. These services include all of the above and then some. The HVAC technician should be the first person you call when you first notice that your 11-20+-year-old air conditioner is not functioning as it did the prior year. You may have to accept the fact that it is time to replace the unit entirely, so do not be surprised if that is what the technician tells you.
