4 Steps To Winterize Your AC And Start Preparing For Winter

Posted on

Once the weather outside gets colder, it is going to be time to prepare your AC with winterization. The steps you need to take include cleaning the system come up inspecting it for damage and preparing components to protect them during winter weather. Here are the steps you need to take to start winterizing your AC and preparing for the cold heating season to come.

1.  Cleaning the AC Unit or Heat Pump

One of the first things that you need to do is clean the AC to prepare for winterization. Whether you have a conventional condensing unit or a more modern heat pump system, the process of cleaning it is going to be the same. Remove any debris from leaves and landscaping inside the unit and make sure that the exterior components are cleaned.

2. Clearing and Drying Out Condensation Drain Lines

The condensation lines of your AC system or another area that needs maintenance before winterization. Make sure the lines are free of any debris and then dry out the drain lines with an air compressor to remove any condensation or moisture. Once the lines are clean and dry, add a plug to both ends to ensure that moisture does not get in during the cold winter season, which can cause damage if water freezes inside the pipes.

3. Properly Covering AC Units to Protect Them

Another issue that you will have to deal with when winterizing your AC is properly covering it. Many people just cover the AC unit and do not consider ventilation. You want the AC cover to be well-ventilated and allow air to circulate inside the AC unit, which will help prevent moisture from building up and problems with mold and mildew when spring arrives.

4. Changing Filters and Servicing Your Furnace

Changing the filters is something that must be done with an HVAC system year-round. When preparing your AC for the winter, you want to change the filters as you are having the furnace serviced and getting ready for the cold season to come. It is also a good idea to check the duct work for any repairs that will be needed, make sure dampers are set for heating, and check all the vents in your home to make sure they have good airflow.

These are the steps you need to take for preparing your AC for the cold heating season. If you need help with repairs or maintenance on your HVAC system, contact an AC maintenance contractor and talk to them about servicing your furnace to get ready for winter.
