3 Tips To Keep Your Home Warmer In The Winter Without Breaking The Bank

Posted on

You shouldn't have to fight to stay warm in your home during the winter. If you've been struggling to keep the temperature inside your home up to a comfortable level, there's a few things that you need to do. Here, you'll find a short list of things that could improve the performance of your heating system and to prevent heat loss from within the home.

Check and Change the Filter

How long has it been since the filter in the furnace has been changed? If the filter is loaded full of particles that it has captured, it is not allowing enough air to flow into the furnace. When the furnace is choked off from a free-flowing source of air, it will not work as efficiently and it won't keep your home as warm as it should.

So, pick up a bundle of furnace filters to keep on hand. Then, set a date in which you'll change the filter each month. The cleaner the filter, the better the air-flow – the warmer your home.

Cover or Expose the Windows?

You've probably read that the windows should be covered with insulated drapes to prevent heat from leaking out small gaps around the windows. Well, that's true, but if you have good windows that aren't allowing for heat-loss, you're losing out on the natural heat that the sun will provide if you pull back the drapes and let the sun in.

Once the sun has moved and is no longer heating the room, you can draw the drapes and keep the heat that it's helped to produce.

Tip: If you aren't sure if your windows have air-leaks around them, get a stick of incense, light it and move it around each window very slowly. Watch for the smoke to be disrupted by little drafts of air leaking into the window. Once you've identified the leaks, you can seal them up with caulk or call to have a professional make the repairs.

Use Room Heaters

Instead of bumping the thermostat for the entire home up a few degrees while you're spending all of your time in one area, pick up an efficient room heater. If you increase the temperature in the room that you use most, and keep the rest of the home comfortable, you'll use far less energy and you'll be more comfortable.
